Market Overview

Gold (XAU/USD) is trading around 4143.96 in the early hours of October 20, 2026, after a week in which price rose to a swing high near 4199, gave back most of the gains, and then bounced sharply from a low near 4115. The rebound has recovered only about a third of the 84 point drop, so price is still trading below the area where the decline accelerated. The 14 period RSI has recovered to 56.34 from about 24 at the low, which shows that selling pressure has eased, but the sequence of lower highs since October 16 has not been broken yet.

Technical Analysis

Looking back to the start of the chart on October 15, gold broke out of the 4134 to 4150 area in a steady run of higher lows and rallied to a first peak near 4177. A shallow dip to about 4148 followed, and buyers then pushed price through 4190 to a swing high near 4199 on October 16, the highest point on the chart. That high was rejected quickly, with a pullback to about 4155 before another bounce.

Into the end of the week, price spent time in a range between roughly 4156 and 4190, with a final lower high near 4190 just after the weekend re-open. From there the market rolled over. A steady run of lower highs carried gold from 4177 through 4165 and down toward 4138, and sellers kept control through most of the October 19 session.

The decline ended with a sharp final plunge to a low near 4115, just inside the 4108 to 4116 support zone flagged in the previous analysis, and the long lower wick on that candle shows buyers stepping in at the extreme. Gold has since rebounded to 4143.96, recovering about a third of the drop from the 4199 high. The bounce has so far stalled below the 4150 to 4156 area, so the series of lower highs since the swing high remains intact.

Support & Resistance

The table below summarizes the most important price levels currently in play, based on the swing highs, swing lows, and reaction zones visible on the chart.

Level Type Price
Major Resistance (Swing High) 4190 – 4199
Resistance 1 (Breakdown Zone) 4165 – 4177
Immediate Resistance 4150 – 4156
Current Price 4143.96
Immediate Support 4136 – 4140
Major Support 4115 – 4122
Extended Support 4073 – 4083

The 4150 to 4156 zone is the most important level right now, since it is the first resistance above price and the area the bounce has not yet cleared. A close above it would suggest the plunge was a flush and open the way toward 4165 to 4177. On the downside, the 4136 to 4140 area is the first support, and the 4115 to 4122 zone, where buyers reacted strongly, is the major floor, so a break below it would put the 4073 to 4083 low back in view.

4

RSI / Momentum

56.34

The 14 period RSI is currently at 56.34, a sharp recovery from about 24 at the 4115 low, the most oversold reading of the past week. It had also reached the low 70s during the rally to 4177 on October 15, so momentum has swung through nearly its whole range in five days. A reading above the neutral 50 line shows buyers have regained the upper hand for now, but RSI peaks have been getting lower since October 16 alongside the lower price highs, which suggests the rebound still has work to do before it can be called a trend change.

▲

Bullish Scenario

In the bullish case, buyers defend the 4136 to 4140 area and price closes above the 4150 to 4156 zone. That would confirm the plunge to 4115 as a liquidity flush and open the path toward the 4165 to 4177 breakdown zone. A close above 4177 would break the sequence of lower highs and bring the 4190 to 4199 swing high back into view.

▼

Bearish Scenario

In the bearish case, the bounce stalls at the 4150 to 4156 zone and forms yet another lower high, with sellers pushing price below 4136 on a closing basis. That would point to a retest of the 4115 to 4122 floor, and a break of that zone would put the 4073 to 4083 low back in view for another test.

5

Forecast

The sharp recovery from the oversold low keeps the short term tone from turning outright bearish, but the series of lower highs since October 16 and the resistance just overhead make a choppy range or a retest of the lows more likely than an immediate recovery. These percentages are illustrative, technically derived estimates intended to communicate relative likelihood based on current chart structure, not a scientific or statistically validated forecast.

Actual gold price movement is influenced by a wide range of fundamental factors including central bank policy expectations, Treasury yield movements, dollar index behavior, geopolitical developments, and broader risk sentiment across global markets, none of which can be reliably read from a price chart alone.

6

Trading Strategy

Traders looking to align with the rebound can watch for a sustained close above 4156, using it as confirmation rather than buying an intraday spike through the level, with 4165 and then 4177 as the next areas of interest. A pullback that holds the 4136 to 4140 zone and turns higher again would offer a lower-risk alternative. Traders looking to fade the bounce can watch for a clear rejection from 4150 to 4156 followed by a close below 4136, which is a cleaner signal than selling directly into a rebound that is still gathering strength.

Because price is sitting between a floor near 4115 and resistance near 4156, entries in the middle of that range offer weaker risk to reward, and waiting for price to reach or break one of the two edges gives a clearer read before committing.

7

Risk Management

Position sizing and stop placement should account for the elevated volatility seen across the 84 point decline from 4199 to 4115 and the sharp spike low made at the end of it. Stops placed too close to the 4136 support or the 4156 resistance risk being caught by normal wicks, so allowing extra room beyond these levels is worth the reduced position size that comes with it. Reducing standard exposure until the market commits clearly to a breakout or a breakdown is a sensible way to manage risk inside a range.

8

Conclusion

Gold has rebounded to 4143.96 after an 84 point decline from the 4199 swing high to a low near 4115, with the RSI recovering to 56.34. The market remains below the 4150 to 4156 resistance and the sequence of lower highs is still intact, so the near term bias is neutral to cautious. A close above 4156 would favor a move toward 4165 and potentially 4177, while a close below 4136 would shift the focus toward 4122 and potentially 4115.
